Cash out - A Tenth Birthday...

Say you're turning ten - double digits for the very first time.  Say what you mostly have on your wish list is cash.  Cash is your life.  Cash would make you EXTREMELY happy.

Now say you maybe had a mother who would never settle for just handing you a stack of cash. ❈ Maybe this mother of yours wants to try to blow your mind a little....

Commence Project Balloon Pop!  So what if her lips were numb by the time she blew up 50 balloons...

Because inside each of those fifty balloons..... was a little secret. ❈

Imagine if you will, fifty secret filled balloons, one secured about every two feet.

All. Over. The. House.

To say this was a home run would be an understatement.  He came in from the bus, walked in and said, "Wow mom, cool decorations.".  And then... this incredulous look washes over his face as he realizes there is MONEY IN EVERY SINGLE BALOON! He couldn't stop laughing :-) "Mom, are you KIDDING me?" "Are you KIDDING ME MOM!" Then more laughing. These are the moments I live for as a mom.... when you get them when they are least expecting it.  He was hoping for the money, but he never imagined this. ❈

Ka-BLAM!

Going for a double...  POP!

He'd try to catch the money as it fluttered down...

Trying to get them all on one leap...

Breaking all the rules about walking on furniture...

A very happy birthday kid. ❈

Flower Shop Birthday Party...

Do you ever have a vision in your head about how you want something to look, but aren't sure if you can really pull it off (And within budget)?  Well, I may have had one tiny little tear well up in my eye this past Saturday, because despite having to move our outdoor plans indoors due to chilly (albeit dry) weather I actually pulled it off!

My girl and I worked together on the Shop signage, I love the little bee she drew over the "o".  Our lemonade stand cleaned up nicely and was transformed into the perfect Flower Shop.  The flowers (120 stems!) were our big budget item at $100, but I felt comfortable with this since they served double duty as both the activity and take home favor for ten kids.  They were purchased at our local Costco.  I did not have these vases full of water as I was worried if one tipped over due to little hands we'd have a big mess on our hands.  I simply put a little water in the bottom of the plastic bags used to transport the flowers and set the bags full of flowers into the vases.

We covered our dining room table with a white sheet and a smaller green tablecloth.  The vases were thrifted for $0.69 each.  The flower clips were found at Oriental Trading Company.

Some of the girls wore them in their hair and some wore them as corsages, they worked great for both.

Here are two of the finished products.  They were stunning and the kids had so much fun arranging them!

We set up the "cake" and our garden stencil activity in our breakfast area.  Again, we used a white bed sheet to cover the table.

Here's a closer look at the "cake".

Our girl does not "do" frosting, so again this year we went with blueberry and chocolate chip muffins.  Green tissue paper tucked into my cupcake stand helped to give more body to our "cake".  The feather butterflies on wire stems were purchased through Oriental Trading Company.  The "8" glitter candle was purchased at Target.  I just love how these butterflies flutter around, you really can't even see the wires, so pretty!

Here is a closer look at the garden insect stencils.  They were purchased through Oriental Trading Company and are plastic and very user friendly.  The kids used markers and copy paper and made some really creatively colored and beautiful pieces of art.

And of course we served up our "cake" with ice cream.  I purchased these at Michael's (Love that 40% off coupon!). They came with the classic little wooden spoon and it was so much tidier/cleaner to eat - not to mention fun ❈  I bought a 1/2 gallon of each chocolate and vanilla ice cream.  The vanilla filled 8 cups and the chocolate 9 cups.  Maybe my filling technique got better the second time around :-)

The weather held and the kids were all able to go outside to play towards the end of the party.  There was much running around looking for frogs and bugs and even a good game of Duck, duck, Goose.  I think they all really enjoyed themselves.  I know this little girl sure did!

Birthday Ideas, Part two...

This was her 7th birthday.  She wanted an "Under the Sea" theme.  It was forecasted to be an especially cool and damp day so we opted for an indoor party.

We hung a grass table skirt embellished with shells on our mantle and filled buckets for party favors.

Again, our girl doesn't "do" frosting so we decorated our foil lined muffins with green and blue dolphin picks and used pretty blue tissue paper to fill in and add pizzaz ❈

Our dear friend over at One Smart Cookie made these darling dolphin cookies for us.

We broke out the window markers and let the kids "decorate".  They were all kinds of giddy, not believing they were being allowed to do this.  It was totally worth it, but if you try this, please know in advance you are going to get real friendly with a bottle of grease cutter (Pine Sol/Fantastic/etc.) afterwards.

They came up with some really cool art (we even had the parents getting in on the action).

I left it on my windows for a few weeks :-)

We also decorated the table with shells.  In the basket we had supplies to make shell bracelets.

The girls loved these.  The boys loved making them too (but I think they gave them to their moms!)

And the highlight was the "Ocean in a Bottle".  So easy to make, so mesmerizing to watch!  This whole party was so easy and turned out very sweet.  It's one of my all time favorites. ❈ (Side note - Just noticed her filthy fingernails... yes, this sweet thing is a dress wearing tom-boy.  That's just how it is!)

(*Note, for our wave bottles I used baby oil, I think it makes for a prettier/clear wave bottle.  I just bought the cheaper Target brand.  We had the bottled pre-filled with water to the correct level before the party started. We let the kids use blue and green food coloring to customize their ocean which was wonderful because some made very light oceans and some very dark, they were all so pretty!  Then we used a candy funnel (it has a stopper you can use to prevent accidental overflow) and let them pour in the baby oil.  We did this two at a time (need an adult helper for each kid filling) while the other kids were using the window markers. One last note.  If you are gentle with them and just reasonably rock them back and forth they last a very long time.  If you shake them up over and over (boys, ahem) they will become clouded.)

Birthdays, Part one...

We're busy getting ready to celebrate our favorite Spring birthday ❈  I thought I'd share two of her past celebrations in case anyone is looking for some ideas for their Spring/Summer parties... Here's the first of the two.  I'll list the sources at the bottom of the post.

This was her sixth birthday.  She wanted a "Garden" theme.  We used metal barbeque skewers in the lawn to tie down and "float" the balloons along the driveway.

We built two "garden" playhouses.  The kids colored these for a while, but mostly they just played in and around them.  They could hold a surprising number of children, and an occasional adult by special request.

She wanted ladybug cupcakes and fresh strawberries, so that's what she got!  You'll notice that the cupcakes (which are really blueberry and freckle chip muffins) are not frosted.  She doesn't care for frosting so we left it off.  Instead we used the ladybug toppers and fresh from the grocery store florist hot pink carnations to decorate our cupcake stand.  I'm not kidding you when I say the kids just devoured this snack!

I didn't get a "before" pic, so you'll have to use your imagination based on this "aftermath" photo.  We used our lemonade stand as a cart.  It held pony packs of annuals and empty pots.  The kids decorated their pots with pony beads, markers, etc and then planted their flowers in them.

They loved this and they were really darling!

Then came the bug jars.  They came as a kit in ladybug and bumble bee versions.

We also had "bug catcher tongs" on hand.

This was truly one of the most idyllic afternoons.  Pure childhood all the way.
